• How to create and reuse H5P activities

    • There are two major ways to use H5P interactive content in your module - either as a separate H5P activity, or by embedding it into any html content such as labels, pages, lessons.

The disadvantage with the H5P activity is that it can make the content flow somewhat cluttery, because you can not integrate an activity in, e.g. a lesson or a page together with other content. That is, you might want to instead be able to embed H5P into pages by using the embed code (see below).

    • Copy an H5P activity into your module

You can copy the H5P activities you find in this module (or any other module in which you are enrolled with sharing permission) directly into your module by using the Backup and Restore function, as shown in the following video.

Another way to copy an H5P activity (or any other content and activities) is through the Import function, as shown in the following video.

    • Create a new H5P activity in your module

Instead of copying existing H5P activities into your module, you can create a new H5P activity.

After clicking on "Add an activity or resource", choose this option:

You can create an activity entirely from scratch, copy from an existing H5P activity or upload an H5P file (such as one that you downloaded from another activity or created on a different platform such as the free Lumi Software https://lumi.education/).

Apps such as the free Lumi app allow you to create H5P activities outside of Moodle on your desktop. You can then upload these files to your content bank or into a Moodle H5P activity, or simply copy and paste them across the H5P editors.

    • Embed or download an H5P activity

      • Each activity in this module also has the option to download the H5P file or to embed the activity. If you create your own H5P activity, you can choose in the settings if you want these reuse and embed options to appear so that other users can reuse your activity. When an activity is opened, these options appear at the bottom of the activity. Click "Reuse" to download the H5P file, and click "Embed" to obtain the embed code.

      • You can upload H5P files into a new H5P activity (see above).

      • You can use the embed code to embed the activity into any html content box (such as in label, page, lesson, book, quiz and questionnaire questions). However, the embedded activity will be linked to the original H5P activity, where ever it is on the learning hub. If you want the activity to be tracked an students' responses to be visible to you within your own module, you need to first create an H5P activity within your module (or copy one from this one by using the Backup, Restore, or Import functions, see above) and then use the embed code from there. You can set the actual H5P activities as "make available but not shown on module page" to make them invisible to students in the module. (do not select "hide from students" as they will not be able to access the embedded H5P activity then).

    • Below is an example of an H5P activity that has been embedded in a text field. You will also notice the reuse and embed options at the bottom of the activity.
